Although there were speculations that the government would confer the highest sporting award of the country - the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award - to three sports persons, it is now official. The Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs had on Wednesday (July 29), in a press conference declared that this year, the country's highest sporting award would be bestowed on three sports persons who have brought laurels for the country in the international arena; the sports persons include MC Mary Kom, Vijendra Singh and Sushil Kumar. Mary Kom and Vijendra Singh incidentally are from the same discipline - boxing, while Sushil Kumar is a wrestler. A common factor between these sports persons is that all of them are from mediocre backgrounds and made it big only  on account of their hard work and determination.
