The government on Tuesday said Sethusamudram Shipping Channel Project would be completed in six to one year time once the Supreme Court gave its go ahead.

"If not Rama's way..We have Sonia..Anna or Kalaingar's (Karunanidhi's) way. The Supreme Court was not against the project as such. We are ready for taking diversion also," Union Minister for Shipping and Surface Transport T R Baalu said on Tuesday evening.

The apex court had only suggested to the government to find an alternative route for implementing the project, he said referring to the litigation pending before the court against demolition of the Ram Sethu or Adam's Bridge.

Describing those who took up the Sethu project issue to the court as "betrayers of Tamils", he said nobody could stop the project. The government had worked very hard for the implementation of the project.

"I give you the assurance, the project will be completed in six to one year time and the ship will pass through the channel..Whether I continue as Shipping minister or not", he said while inaugurating the 50-km stretch of four-lane road from Tirumangalam to Sattur on NH-7 at Tirumangalam near in Madurai.

The Rs 250-crore four-lane project had been designed for high speed travel. The stretch would have a bypass road at Tirumangalam, six underpasses, four major bridges, 15 minor bridges and 46 culverts and one rail over bridge. PTI
