The country's telecom sector has been growing at a fast pace, so much so that there was an addition of 119.14 lakh telecom subscribers in the month of June this year. This takes the total number of telephone connections in the country to 4648.35 lakhs, as of June 30, 2009.

The  wireless (GSM and CDMA) segment has seen the maximum increase with 120.48 lakh connections, however, the wireline segment has witnessed a steep decline.


In the wireline segment, only the Delhi Telecom circles added more than 20,000 subscribers during June 2009. The growth of broadband connections improved further and at the end of May 2009, 64 lakh broadband connections were provided. Further, the total number of existing ISP licences at the end of May 2009 stood at 375.

Under the Bharat Nirman Programme, 264 VPTs (village public telephones) were provided in the month of May. Out of the targetted 66,822 villages, a total of 57595 villages have been provided with VPTs till May 2009.
