The FICCI (Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry) Health Services Committee has prepared consolidated clinical guidelines for the management of H1N1 cases in private hospitals to ensure a high level of preparedness for the hospital staff to fight the virulence and contain the spread of the swine flu. The guidelines spell out the steps required for containing the spread of H1N1 ie sampling and segregation, testing and treatment. This document is being circulated to the Union and State Governments.

FICCI said that private sector hospital members of FICCI Health Services Committee are willing to go the extra mile in supporting the Government in its effort to tackle the disease by making their hospitals and laboratories available at reasonable costs. With the resources in public hospitals and laboratories stretched to the limit, it's imperative that both government and the public look at the private hospitals for treatment and diagnosis, it said.

Further, most private hospitals are modifying their physical infrastructure to provide a room that could be used as a designated clinic to examine the H1N1 suspects and making provision for dedicated ICU that can be used in pandemic situation. The private sector Laboratories are upgrading their infrastructure with the requisite equipments and kits needed for H1N1 testing.

FICCI said the support that is needed from the government is in terms of supply of personal protective gear for the hospital and laboratory staffs and doctors, supply of tamiflu to be dispensed to patients and high risk hospital and laboratory staff, sample collection kits, viral media and transport containers. This support would help in keeping the cost of treatment and diagnosis in private hospitals and laboratories down considerably.
