In a sudden and unexpected move, the judges of the Supreme Court, including the Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan have decided that they will make public the assets they held at the time of appointment to the Supreme Court and additions, if any.
A Full court meeting presided over by Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan took the decision in this regard.
It has been decided that the Supreme Court judges will put the list of assets on Supreme Court Website. Sources said that a unanimous resolution was passed by the judges on this issue, which is released only after it is signed by all the judges.
Presently, the judges disclose their assets to the Chief Justice of India as per a procedure adopted in 1997. This decision of the Supreme Court judges will have no bearing on the High Courts judges, who will take an independent decision in this regard.
The decision of the Supreme Court judges comes in wake of voluntary disclosures made by Justice DV Shylendra Kumar of the Karnataka High Court and Justice K Kannan of the Punjab and Haryana Court.
There has been a strong built up of public opinion calling for more transparency and disclosure of assets by judges. Not only this, there is a strong clamour for making the appointment of judges more transparent and accountable.
