India's emerging tennis star Somdev Devvarman has qualified for the main draw of the prestigious Grand Slam Tournament US Open in the Singles category. By doing so, he became the first Indian in seven years to qualify for the main draw of the US Open. Preceding to him, it was Prakash Amritraj who last played in the main draw of the US Open singles tournament in the year 2002.
Playing with his usual enthusiasm Somdev defeated Jerzy Janowicz of Poland in the round three of the qualifying tournament, in the second round he defeated world number 305 Igor Sijsling of the Netherlands in three sets 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 and kept himself in the fray.
5.11 ft tall, Somdev is a right handed tennis player who has honed his tennis skills in USA during his studies there. During his studies with the University of Virginia he performed sensationally and went on to win two straight NCAA Singles National Championship. He achieved the rare feat in the year 2007 and 2008 and was billed as one of the rising stars in the lawn tennis who will make it big one day. In both the NCAA championship he was given top rank a great honour for an individual who hails from North Eastern state-Assam.
Till date his best ATP performance has been at his home ground in the 2009 Chennai Open where he went on to reach the final of the championship playing in front of his home crowd. Unfortunately in the finale he lost to Marin Cilic of Croatia 6-4, 7-6 (3). On his way to the finale, he defeated many top rank players including 25th rank Ivo Karlovic of Croatia and 42nd rank Carlos Moya of Spain.
