India has won the first match against Sri Lanka being played at Rajkot despite the spirited Sri Lankan chase which brought the match down to wire. Sangakarra, Tilakratne Dilshan played the main role in the huge run chase of 414 runs but the loss of wickets in the ending stage of the match lost the plot for the Lankans.

Sri Lanka lost Mathew Arnold's wicket in the last over on a full toss ball and the match tilted in India's favour. Sri Lanka needed 6 runs in two balls and two wickets remained as Ashish Nehra bowled. Sri Lanka needs 5 runs in one ball to win the match but could not do so.

India versus Sri Lanka first one day match was poised evenly despite the highest one day international score posed by Indians against the visitors. Lankans needed 25 runs from 24 balls and had 5 wickets in hand as they looked to cruise towards the huge Indian total of 414 runs.

Thilan Kandamby playing at 21 runs and Angelo Mathews at 22 were leading the chase for the Sri Lankans in what could have been a historic victory for the visitors. This is India's highest one day international score posed against any team and prior to the start of the Sri Lankan inning it could have been almost impossible to predict Sri Lankan inching this close to 414. But the Lankans at one time were inching closer to the victory as 15 runs were needed of 12 balls.

Kandamby was run out, while trying to steal a single on the bowling of Zaheer Khan.
