The portrayal of violence in mass media, particularly television programmes, has lately become a reason for concern in the country like India. Violent behaviour in the American society has come to be viewed as a public health problem for which, besides many obvious factors such as breakdown of the nuclear family, poverty and fall in traditional values, the mass media is regarded as a major cause.
Journalism is basically a profession which was born out of the sheer need to check the immoral and unethical practices by human beings and now its presence is felt in almost all the spheres. The students of journalism are taught the importance of ethics during their course of study. Now the question is that where have these ethics gone?
Sometimes, one starts feeling that the news channels have returned to the early Egyptian period when people used to enjoy barbaric games of real murders in arenas just to entertain themselves. In 380 BC Saint Augustine had said,''The society has become addicted to gladiator games and is drunk with the fascination of bloodshed."
This statement still holds good if we see the violence portrayed in the news channels. Before going further let's see what exactly the meaning of violence is. The dictionary meaning of violence is- the expression of physical or verbal force against self or other, compelling action against one's will on pain of being hurt.
Coming back to news channels, it is quite evident that the media is in a race to cash on human emotions by an unjustified display of violence through news channels. Media is considered as one of the pillars of democracy and now it has started holding public for ransom. Gradually, it has over shadowed the whole humanity and these days trials are more or less conducted by media. The Arushi Talwar murder case is a good example in this regard.
Sex and bloodshed sells more than any other thing in the market. So, both were incorporated by the news channels. Attentiveness of both is essential but for family viewing programmes, this substance be supposed to be within limits. Many times, unprocessed, disturbing visuals are shown directly on television. War, death, physical assault and bloodshed have become common viewing in news. News channels, for higher TRPs and cash generation, fight for live telecast of events, which are at times not suitable to be watched by children. Sometimes such telecasts lead to religious or communal clashes or other violent acts by those of an impressionable age. Whose responsibility is it when children commit these crimes and violent acts, imitating these news items? The results of such thoughtless broadcasts are not a secret, but sadly, keep on increasing day by day. |
