Congress cornered to take a hard decision on Telangana issue Bookmark and Share

Thursday, 28 January 2010
With deadline decided by the Joint Action Committee (JCA) formed by political parties from Telangana region, set today for the centre to announce a `road map' for the formation of new state, the political environment in Andhra Pradesh seems to be like a lull before a storm.

The JCA has asked the peoples' representatives from the region to submit their resignations on January 29, 2010, if the Centre failed to announce a `road map' by tomorrow. This has put pressure on the MPs and MLAs from the Congress party in the region to take a tough decision about their future.

Though both Congress and Telugu Desam party MPs and MLAs are saying time and again that they are ready to submit their resignation, it seems they are actually not ready for it. Meanwhile, the Congress high-command has been exerting pressure on their MPs and MLAs not to go to the extent of resigning from their positions. In such a scenario, AICC General Secretary and AP Congress affairs in-charge Veerappa Moily said that the Centre would be forced to bring the state under President's Rule.

Moily said in clear terms, that if President's Rule is imposed, creation of a new state would be deferred for a long time. This has kept the Congress MPs and MLAs tightlipped. In fact, party leaders planned to camp in Delhi from the evening of January 26, to add pressure on their high command. However, party senior leaders and former ministers K Jana Reddy and R Damodar Reddy returned back form Delhi on Tuesday evening, after Moily asked them not to visit Delhi any more.

Moily said that already party high command is aware of the sentiments of the party leaders from all regions of Andhra Pradesh. Any more attempts by them to brief the high command would only lead to delay the process. However, on Wednesday morning these two leaders left for Delhi after they received a call from the party high command. They are expected to meet party president Sonia Gandhi later in the day.

This sudden invitation to the leaders from the party high command indicates that the party leadership is moving towards making a policy statement on the issue of Telangana state in a day or two.

Meanwhile, Telangana Rastra Samithi chief K Chandrasekhar Rao said that the MPs and MLAs from Telangana should bring pressure on the Speaker to get their resignations accepted and the TRS MPs should be in the forefront in this regard.
Chandrasekhar Rao requested the people's representatives from the region to resign and bring pressure on the Centre to act on the Statehood issue.

Just as the leaders from Andhra region camped in Delhi to obstruct the process of Telangana formation, the leaders from Telangana should also prevail upon the Centre to go ahead with the process of bifurcation, he said. He assured that he would, if required, plead with the people of Telanagana to ensure that the leaders who resigned would be re-elected.

"So far more than 250 students have committed suicide for the cause. For their sake and to ensure that there are no further suicides, please resign and bring pressure on the Speaker to get the resignations accepted,'' the TRS chief said. The people are not asking for your lives, only your posts, which can be earned again, he added. He urged the people to force their representatives to resign and not allow them to step into their constituencies if they failed to quit
