Residents in India learned a lesson while getting entertained, recently -- a lesson about how to stop the spread of AIDS was conveyed through entertainment. Volunteers used street theater to communicate with residents in small towns and big cities. While such outdoor performances are deeply rooted in traditional India, they are used these days to discuss social and political messages.

The Delhi State AIDS Control Society collaborated with the Amity Humanity Foundation charity group on a two-day programme, which included a street play, a movie screening and on-the-spot counseling.

Voluntary organisations or the non governmental organisations in India work in parallel with the government for development of the society. The NGOs majorly look after the spheres which are generally considered to be out of governmental reach.

These NGOs depend on funding from different sources including governmental and the corporate bodies. These funds are given to the organisations and the amount is determined by their previous performances and the kind of work they are supposed to do. Since India is a developing country and has got all types of problems, role of NGOs here is very crucial.

"One can't think about the development without going and working in the field," said Nishant Ojha, a spokesman for the Rajasthan based NGO Srijan, who participated in the project.
These folk media and street theatres are considered to be few of very important tools for creating awareness.

"Development is not about wearing T-shirts with developmental and motivational quotes," added Ojha. A sum total of approximately 300 dollar was spent for this two-day awareness camp, which was enough to cover all the expenses in organising the play and also distributing free condoms among the people.

Organisers worked hard to make sure that the street plays are short and to the point. The play contained humour, an important part of the street performances to bind the audience.
